17. What’s the most infuriating thing your parents (or caregiver) do?

Not tell me things, in an effort to protect me. I understand their instinct, but at the same time, I’m should be given some credit about how much I can cope with (which, we’ve found, is a lot). The worst was when we were in the Netherlands my second year of college, over Christmas, and they told me that the woman rabbi who’d trained me for my bat mitzvah, who was from Haarlem, had died two or three weeks before. It was finals season, so they didn’t want to upset me. I was quite upset anyway, I can assure you!

34. Do you have any “rules” about food?

There are foods I won’t eat because of texture, and if it smells bad, nothing will convince me to try it anyway. The only other thing I can really point to is that if I’m visiting someplace and I’m at a restaurant, I try and get the thing I couldn’t get anywhere else. It’s led to some interesting surprises, usually in a good way, so I’d recommend it, myself!
