The woman with the fox and the ukulele
Miss Lois Fox was a versatile entertainer from the South. Her captivating Hawaiian music and ukulele made her a favorite wherever she went.
During the great war she entertained the troops but before sailing, she tried out a great many ukuleles in order to find the one best suited for her strenuous tour. She selected the Ditson Hawaiian Professional Model No. 3 as being the best instrument and capable of producing the most powerful and sonorous tone. Ditson ukuleles were made by Martin but had a Ditson stamp. The soldiers she met on tour gave her a fox as a pet because of her name. She named the fox ‘Nappy-Jo’ and took it back the USA at the end of the tour.
When she returned, Lois Fox and her Ditson ukulele were much in demand among many clubs and societies. The original foxy lady? (Photo circa 1920)
That is pretty rock’n’roll.
