But…I’m American and I DO take my shoes off as soon as I walk in the door. At my house, any family’s house, and any friends I’m familiar with. (I don’t do it with people I’m not close to because some of them don’t do it and think it’s weird.) And I almost never wear socks so I really am barefoot whenever I’m at home. Currently barefoot right now.

See, this is what confuses me - if it’s a regional thing, what region are we talking about? You’re in the South of the U.S., right? Whereas this gif is from Chicago which is…(oh help american geography)…not that far from Windsor and Sault-St-Marie in Canada. So you’d think the behaviour would be similar in the more geographically close locations, but no. Apparently not.

I wish there were one of those colour-coded maps for this because I have heard before of people not taking their shoes off indoors, but it’s always in some mysterious other-land that isn’t pinned down. Where does this happen and why?

…I can’t even begin to talk about the ways in which Chicago is not at all like Canada, no matter how close they are.

(I think Chicago owes a lot more to being a railroad hub than being in the Great Lakes region, honestly.)

Also, all we know is that these people are Blackhawks fans. They could be anywhere.

Also also, as someone who grew up in Appalachia, all I can say about the shoes thing is that it was highly individual, and I’ve had no consistent experience about removing shoes in any one region of the U.S. I’ve traveled in. If that helps? Er. Which I don’t suppose it does.

Like a love triangle, except in this case they are competing for the approval of the Ghost of Dante in order to get permission to transcribe Book Four of the Divine Comedy. (In 19th-century French.)

The Art of Onfim: Medieval Novgorod Through the Eyes of a Child

One of the most fascinating archeological finds in Russia has been the discovery of hundreds of “birchbark documents” (messages written on the bark of birch trees with a sharp stylus) that were created from the 11th to the 15th century. The drawings from Novgorod that we have found appear to all come from a Russian boy named Onfim, who lived at the end of the twelfth century or beginning of the thirteenth century in the city of Novgorod. By the estimate of the archaeologists who unearthed his works, he was around seven years old at the time that he made these drawings. Onfim was being taught to write, but he was obviously restless with his lessons and when he could get away with it, he intermixed his assignments with doodlings. In this first example, he started to write out the first eleven letters of the alphabet in the upper right corner, but got bored and drew a picture of himself as a grown-up warrior impaling an enemy with his spear. To remove any doubt about the identity of the warrior, he even labeled the person on the horse as “Onfim.”

To quote someone else, “Empires and civilizations throughout time have had their own unique styles, but children’s art, it seems, has never changed.” I cannot even deal with these drawings. That I burst out laughing at one of them, and then realized how long ago Onfim lived and died, was kind of a humbling and very human moment.
